school prize bookplate on marbled endpapers printed with gold ink

Prize books and bookplates

Jessica Le

In 2019 when I was in England for 2 months I would browse second hand bookshops looking for bookplates. The easiest ones to spot were school prize bookplates because of how ornate the bindings are and as you can guess from the title, these were given out as prizes in schools. Usually these books would come unbound for this purpose and then schools would contract a bindery to emboss their school logo to the front.

I can’t get over the marbled endpapers and the gold foil ‘turn in’ (the slither of gold foiling on the edges)!

For any teachers and educators I have prize bookplate stickers available for purchase in the shop if you want to continue this tradition!
