Discover historic book embossers

Jessica Le

Historically, book embossers were mainly used by institutions and university libraries whereas bookplate stickers were used by readers marking their personal collection. For a sticker design, individuals had the opportunity to show their personality and likes through their choice of artist and what they would portray on their bookplate. But because universities simply wanted to mark their collection, a book embosser with an unobtrusive design was a quick and easy way to mark hundreds, if not thousands of books. Below I've collected a few historic designs, some are particularly interesting in shape (like the belt in the 4th image)!
