'Thys boke is myne Prynce Henry'

'Thys boke is myne Prynce Henry'

Jessica Le

It's been a while since I took a dive into a historical bookplate. Although this is more of an inscription than a bookplate! The boy who wrote 'Thys boke is myne Prynce Henry' would eventually be known as King Henry VIII.

Prince Henry would've been around 11 when he wrote this in Cicero's 'Commentū familiare in Ciceronis officia' from 1502. The middle, larger text is Cicero's while the surrounding text would be commentary from various humanist scholars. Cicero's writings, as well as other Roman writers, would've formed the curriculum for young Prince Henry.

As someone interested in bookplates, I particularly love the wording 'this book is mine' as opposed to 'from the library of/ex libris'. Others I've seen have similar wording like 'my book, [name], or like 'Eleanor Moore, her book'. The handwriting is especially fun to see.
