A short one for #FableFridays today! Banderoles, French for little banner, is a thin and long flag/ribbon and is something that pops up in old art quite a bit yet not many people have heard about them. Historically they were used atop ships. They're used in art and architecture as a sort of 'speech bubble' scroll most noticeably on medieval/Renaissance art. But why scrolls? From what I've read it has to do with the Old Testament prophets as they were originally written on scrolls (whereas the New Testament was written in codices -- bound books).

You'll see my English Garden bookplate design and Star Light & Star Bright designs both use banderoles (and are available from my shop)! I've also included an example at the end you guys might be familiar with 👀
